The modern version of the Joulupukki depicts an aged man wearing a red, goat-skinned fur coat, with an uncanny resemblance to the traditional Santa Claus. People incorporated the goat into Finnish Christmas celebrations, imitating Joulupukki by dressing up in skins and tree-bark masks—ostensibly to ward off evil spirits, but really to go from door to door demanding leftover food and—more importantly—booze; Christmas plays feature people dressed up as goats being symbolically slaughtered, only to jump up at the end, magically resurrected. Joulupukki, also known as Santa Claus or The Yule Goat, is the main antagonist of the 2010 Finnish comedy-horror film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale.
